I first encountered circus-life while travelling the Midwest festival circuit with my mother as a face-painting duo. While on breaks from turning kids into creatures, I marvelled at the vagabond artist lifestyle and found there is nowhere more inclusive than among circus-folks. Emboldened by their sense of resilience and community, I felt it was the perfect backdrop for a story about radical self-love and facing heartbreak with wild abandon. Circus Person is my directorial debut and I am so humbled to share it with the world, thanks to our entire film-circus. I have since had the chance to perform with Circus Flora and the Shoestring Circus, and I now have my own family circus we like to call the Extraordinary Circus, which includes my husband, hairstylist Kenna Kennor (who can balance a chair on his chin!), my amazing young step-kids (an aspiring magician and acrobat), our co-parents who live nearby, and a recently rescued pup named Bow-Tie, who is a true and wise clown.

“I became smitten with the Flynn Creek Circus after seeing their tent show in Sebastopol, CA in 2019 while doing field research. Married couple David Jones and Blaze Birge both trained separately with the Dumitrascus, a 5th generation Romanian circus family. Blaze said she formed the Flynn Creek Circus hoping to merge what she admired about tradition with innovation and to bring world-class circus acts to small towns around the Mendocino area. When I discovered they were coming to perform at a circus-themed wedding on an avocado farm in LA, I eagerly planned production around their arrival and was so fortunate to collaborate with them cinema-verité style.” —Britt
